Every Woman Needs a Village.
Once a month, the same group of 10–12 women comes together at Chickory Acres to learn traditional homesteading skills and enjoy a home cooked organic meal together.
It’s an opportunity to try something new, share what you know, and build friendships with women who enjoy the same things.
No experience or homestead required. Just come as you are.

How it all started
In 2022, my friend Amanda started the Homesteading Women’s Group at Sunset Highway Farm with a simple idea: create a night out that busy women would actually make time for. What began as a way to find friendship in an often lonely homesteading lifestyle grew into a community of women gathering monthly to share a meal, learn new skills, create something with their hands, and enjoy each other’s company.
I’m so excited to bring the Homesteading Women’s Group to Spokane’s north side!
Building Chickory Acres has given me a deep appreciation for the beauty and peace of this lifestyle. There’s something deeply satisfying about working with your hands, caring for the land, and feeling connected to the place I call home. I’ve wanted to share that feeling with others.
But what excites me most is the opportunity to create a space where women can gather as they are.
Each month, the same 10–12 women will come together to learn, make, share a meal, and build meaningful friendships. You don’t need a homestead or any particular experience to belong here. Just curiosity to learn and a willingness to make time for yourself.
My hope is that these gatherings become something you look forward to every month. A chance to step away from expectations, reconnect with yourself and your community, and find joy in making things, learning together, and simply being present.
Dedicated time each month to nourish your Self.
What to expect
We meet once a month at Chickory Acres (Chattaroy, WA) in groups of 10 – 12 women. Depending on your group, meetings are held from 5:45 – 8:45 PM OR 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM.
General Meeting Itinerary
Share a Meal
We start by sitting down to dinner or lunch together. Many ingredients come from our farm, and we source the rest from local, organic producers whenever possible. You’ll receive the recipes so you can make everything at home, too.
Good Conversation
Each month, we have a discussion topic that gives us a chance to get to know one another beyond the usual introductions and small talk. As the year goes on and friendships develop, the conversations tend to become more personal and thoughtful. For many members, this becomes their favorite part of the group.
Learn Something New
After our meal, we move into the month’s hands-on lesson. We’ll learn practical skills like food preservation, cooking, baking, fermenting, and making things we can use at home. The focus is on skills you can continue practicing long after the meeting ends.
Time Together
You’re welcome to head home when the lesson wraps up, or stay and enjoy the conversation until the meeting ends.
What You’ll Take Home
At your first meeting, you’ll receive a course binder. Each month, we’ll add lesson notes, instructions, and recipes. By the end of the year, you’ll have more than 200 pages of resources to keep and refer back to.
Most months, you’ll also take home something you’ve made during the lesson, such as homemade soap, tallow balm, canned jam, or traditional herbal preparations like fire cider and fermented garlic honey.
Learn at Home w/ Video Lessons
Every lesson includes an online video tutorial you can revisit anytime. Whether you want to practice a skill again or need a refresher months later, the instructions will be available.
Before each meeting, you’ll also receive an email with the upcoming lesson, meal plan, and discussion topic so you know what to expect.
What group members are saying
See what members of Sunset Highway’s Airway Heights location say about the Women’s Homesteading Group!
“This class has been exactly what I’ve been looking for to give me confidence in trying new skills of homesteading…” – Dawn B.
“If you are looking to learn, have fun, and meet some wonderful people…this is it! Whether you are a novice or an expert, this class is for you.” – Sabrina W.
Is this group for you?
You do not need to be an experienced homesteader to join us. Whether you’ve been growing and preserving for decades or you’ve never grown so much as a tomato and just want to learn, this group is for you.
The application process isn’t about finding the “most homesteady” woman in town (ha!). It’s about finding women who are ready to commit to a full year together. We will build groups with a good mix of ages, backgrounds, and experience levels so real friendships have room to grow.
A few quick answers, if you’re on the fence:
“I don’t have any homesteading experience.”
Perfect — most of what we teach is brand new to at least half of every group.
“I’m shy / I don’t know anyone.”
Every single member walks in a stranger on night one. The whole point is to build a community. I actually discourage friends from joining the same group because it often prevents them from building friendships with everyone else.
“I don’t have a garden, animals, or land.”
No problem, they aren’t required. Everything taught is something you can do in a small kitchen.
“What about dietary restrictions?”
We are a GLUTEN FREE household. Members with restrictions can eat most of what we provide, or you are welcome to bring your own food. Please reach out, I don’t want this to be a reason you don’t come.
“What if I miss a meeting?”
You’ll get the take-home materials and goodies at the next meeting, plus full access to the online video lesson for anything you missed.
What are we learning?
Our curriculum is designed as a three-year program, with members joining one year at a time and the option to continue each year.
Each year includes three units, with monthly classes and breaks in April, August, and December to accommodate holidays, school schedules, and family vacations.
January

Rendering & Using Animal Fats
The most commonly consumed fats in America do more harm than good. This month, members learn about lard and tallow.
How to source them, how to render them down, how to make balms & lotions from them, and how to cook with them in a way that’s both nourishing and genuinely delicious.
February–March
Natural Soap Making
Learn how to make natural soap from lard, tallow, clay, and natural dyes. I’ll share my favorite soap recipes, loaded with benefits for your skin and free of harsh chemicals.
In March, members get to apply what they’ve learned and split into groups to have a soap making competition. This is typically one of the favorite classes of the year!

May–July

Canning 101: Water Bath & Pressure Canning
In May, members learn how to preserve fruits by water bath canning without sugar or artificial preservatives.
In June, they then learn how to preserve meats, beans, vegetables, and meals by pressure canning.
Then, in July, members apply what they’ve learned during a canning day. They divide into groups and can a variety of recipes. By the end of the unit, all members should be canning confidently!
September–October
Medicinal Remedies
Learn to make our most popular immune-boosting remedies. Over the years, our community has consistently reported dramatic reductions in winter illness duration and frequency after incorporating these traditional remedies into their daily routine.

November

Natural Cleaners
Learn how to make your own laundry detergent, dishwasher detergent, and other cleaners. By the end of the meeting, you’ll have what you need to eliminate many toxins from your home.

- We (Andrew and I) believe in treating people, animals, and the land with care and respect. These values guide how we live, how we farm, and how we welcome others into our home.
- Women of all faiths, backgrounds, and identities are welcome here. We don’t have to share the same beliefs to learn from one another, build friendships, and enjoy time together 🙂
