Originating in western France, in a town of the same name, Black Copper Marans are known for their dark chocolate-brown eggs; they are the darkest of all Marans varieties. Black Copper Marans eggs are darkest at the start of the laying cycle, lighten, then return to their darkest color after a rest period.
